Week 1 : I Love Bogota
Maybe it's because I managed expectations, but Bogota has been pleasantly surprising. Yes, the weather is pretty English (think late-April) but as there are no seasons here everyone gets on with it and life seems to roll at full pace whatever month it is. It's not an attractive city architecturally, but it's lively, practical and fun. I've never been a brilliant tourist, so the lack of cathedrals or obvious cultural attractions doesn't bother me (still haven't been to the Gold Museum).
There's no metro and I haven't braved the buses, but with taxis costing on average $3 - $5 for most places I need to go, it doesn't matter. Everyone I have met is kind, and unlike my neighbours for the last 7 years, delighted to have a foreigner to show the city off to.
I feel like I haven't even scratched the surface socially, so I'm excited to come back and settle here. Maybe the rest of Colombia will change my mind, but after a long time in a small, quiet city populated mainly by the aged, Bogota feels like the perfect antidote, and the best way to experience life in Colombia as a young professional.
